Bits & Pixels Meeting Roundup

Leevi Graham—30th April, 2008  |  14 Comments

So its a bit late, but here's a round up of the last Bits & Pixels event.

Firstly it was a huge success with a 100% increase of attendees. We had some really keen people traveling from the Central Coast to meet up so thanks to those guys for making the effort - we hope your trip home and then onto Sydney and back again (what a mission) was a memorable one.

The last meetup covered a range of topics including everyones favourite... how to get clients to pay on time, and the emerging mobile web industry in Australia. Of course there was mention of drinking good scotch and fine gins.

I guess we could / should have a topic picked out for the event (a talking-point if you will) that we can focus on, and think about beforehand, so that we can get some different points of view. So for the next meetup if you have any ideas, leave a comment and let us know.

See you there!

It was good fun. Plus you found a new drinking partner smile

We should consider heading out for dinner somewhere afterwards? Just an idea since we stayed till 6 last time.

I’m getting in to Rails, so we could talk about that. Or another topic that annoys me lately, crappy design blogs with Top 100’s of everything!

Yeah extending the meetup hours to include a casual dinner and more conversation is a goal.

All we need now is to convince people to not drive so there are no restrictions later in the afternoon.

Hey guys,

Thanks for having me at the meeting, I look forward to the next one (and possibly some more scotch too) wink

It was good to meet ya’ll, I’m keen to come up again. I’ll let Ben know about the one coming up, I’m sure he’s keen too.

Anthony - if you’re getting into rails, check out RoR Oceania (http://rubyonrails.com.au). There’s a Sydney meetup coming up soon, I think it’s on the 17th of May or something. Also, Railscamp is great—http://railscamp08.org

Cheers

Shame I missed the last event. Was busy with the site linked to my name (Rails BTW). Look forward to the next meet up. Feel like I am hiding out in the shadows!

Always seem to be busy on your meeting days… moving house this time but we will see how smoothly it goes.

Hey everyone,

I was just thinking about a subject that I would like to see thrown around - Sales or selling, bringing in the work to sustain a business or at least to sustain the freelance lifestyle. It seems to me that there is a slow down in actual work out there at the moment. This may have something to do with the end of the financial year coming up - but perhaps there is more to the picture.

- Michael

Congrats Michael – you have the honor of being the proud instigator of the first ever serious Bits & Pixels discussion topic smile

Wow...web dev and design discussion AND booze? Do you guys ever come down to anywhere around Sydney for these meetings?

Mike Jarocki—6th June, 2008 at 5:06pm  |  Permalink

@Mike - Bits & Pixels is only a Newcastle gathering at the moment, but we do have the occasional visitor from Sydney.

You might want to check out the Sydney Web Standards Group. They get together every week I believe, and apparently there are beers to be had there too smile

Hi guys, my partner has been posted up to Newcastle this year and I intend on moving up there next year. To cut a long story short I was wondering if you had any meetings occurring around the 20th of july or so? It’s still a while before I move, but I wouldn’t mind getting to know some of you and take some information/food/beer in.

Tom Ridge—13th June, 2008 at 11:23pm  |  Permalink

@Tom - We usually meet up every third Saturday, so yes, we’ll be meeting Saturday, 19th July.

Looking forward to sharing a beer wink
